Inside the Formula: Shastrokta Wisdom & Modern Research
Ayurveda calls obesity sthaulya or medoroga. Charaka explains that when meda (fat) blocks the channels, vata is trapped in the belly and keeps agni burning, so hunger keeps rising and fat keeps building. The answer is lekhana (scraping excess meda), agni-deepana (correcting metabolism) and kapha-shamana. Be Fit is built on this shastrokta principle.
Triphala · Haritaki · Bibhitaki · Amalaki
Shastrokta view: Triphala is a classical lekhana and sara (gently cleansing) formula that pacifies kapha and supports regular digestion.
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Triphala pacifies kapha and pitta, gently clears the bowels (sara), kindles agni and is described for prameha and skin disorders.
"हरड़ बहेड़ा आंवला, घी शक्कर संग खाय…"
A well-known north-Indian folk couplet that praises the strength given by Triphala (Harad, Baheda, Amla).
Modern research: Reviews of Triphala describe its gentle laxative, prebiotic and gut-supporting effects. [Tarasiuk A, et al. Triphala: current applications and new perspectives on the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders. Chinese Medicine, 2018]
Trikatu · Shunthi · Maricha · Pippali
Shastrokta view: The "three pungents" form the classical agni-deepana and kapha-medohara trio, which also helps the body absorb other herbs.
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Pippali kindles agni, is a rasayana and removes vata and kapha.
Vidanga · Embelia ribes
Shastrokta view: Sharp, hot and light, Vidanga kindles agni and reduces kapha and bloating. Charaka counts it among the krimighna herbs, and it is a key herb in classical sthaulya formulas.
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Vidanga is sharp, hot, dry and light; it kindles agni and relieves bloating, kapha and sluggish bowels.
Medohara Guggulu · Classical preparation
Shastrokta view: As its name says, this classical guggulu preparation is for meda (fat). Old guggulu is described as atilekhana, strongly fat-scraping.
Punarnava, Daruharidra & Dashamoola · Boerhavia diffusa · Berberis aristata · roots of ten herbs
Shastrokta view: Punarnava reduces fluid and swelling, Daruharidra is a tikta lekhana herb for kapha-meda, and Dashamoola calms vata.
Arogyavardhini, Trimurti Rasa, Kaharva Pishti & Shilajit · Classical preparations
Shastrokta view: Arogyavardhini supports the liver and fat metabolism, Shilajit is Charaka's rasayana for meda and prameha, and Kaharva cools pitta.
— Charaka Samhita, Chikitsa Sthana 1
Meaning: There is hardly a curable disorder on earth that Shilajatu cannot help overcome. It is Charaka's celebrated verse of reverence for this rasayana.
