Inside the Formula: Shastrokta Wisdom & Modern Research
Detox Ark is a liquid ark of 23 herbs and classical minerals, chosen in the shastrokta way for yakrit (liver), vrikka (kidney) and rakta shodhana (blood purification). Bitter (tikta) herbs lead the formula. Ayurveda considers tikta rasa the natural cleanser of pitta, kapha and rakta. Here are the key ingredients.
Haridra (Haldi Salam) · Curcuma longa
Shastrokta view: One of the most celebrated herbs of Ayurveda: a rakta-shodhaka (blood purifier), kapha-pitta shamaka and a classical herb for prameha and skin disorders.
हरिद्रा कटुका तिक्ता रूक्षोष्णा कफपित्तनुत्।
वर्ण्या त्वग्दोषमेहास्रशोथपाण्डुव्रणापहा॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Haridra is pungent, bitter, dry and hot; it pacifies kapha and pitta, improves complexion and is described for skin disorders, prameha, blood impurities, swelling, pallor and wounds.
Modern research: Curcumin from turmeric has been studied in a randomized placebo-controlled trial in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where it was associated with improvement in liver fat and liver enzymes. [Rahmani S, et al. Treatment of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease with Curcumin: A Randomized Placebo-controlled Trial. Phytotherapy Research, 2016]
Haritaki (Halila Jangi) · Terminalia chebula
Shastrokta view: The "king of medicines" (vijaya) of Ayurveda. It gently clears the bowels and carries ama out of the body, which is the first step of any detox.
हरीतकी मनुष्याणां मातेव हितकारिणी।
कदाचित् कुप्यते माता नोदरस्था हरीतकी॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Haritaki cares for people like a mother. A mother may sometimes be angry, but Haritaki in the stomach never harms.
Yavani (Ajwain) & Gokshura (Gokhru) · Trachyspermum ammi · Tribulus terrestris
Shastrokta view: Ajwain kindles agni and digests ama, and Gokshura is the classical basti-shodhana (bladder-cleansing) herb that supports the kidney side of the detox.
"एका यवानी शतमन्नपाचिका।"
A traditional saying: "Ajwain alone digests a hundred kinds of food."
