Inside the Formula: Shastrokta Wisdom & Modern Research
Nasya is one of the classical panchakarma procedures and a daily dinacharya practice. Sinus Care Nasyam follows the logic of the classical Anu Taila tradition. Eighteen herbs are processed into a base of sesame oil and goat's milk, the classical sneha for nasya.
Why nasya: the nose is the gateway to the head
Shastrokta view: Vagbhata explains why nasya is the treatment of choice for the head, nose, eyes and ears.
ऊर्ध्वजत्रुविकारेषु विशेषान्नस्यमिष्यते।
नासा हि शिरसो द्वारं तेन तद्व्याप्य हन्ति तान्॥
— Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutra Sthana 20
Meaning: For disorders above the collar-bone, nasya is the treatment of choice. The nose is the gateway to the head, so medicine given through it pervades the head and relieves those disorders.
The promise of regular nasya
Shastrokta view: Charaka lists the benefits of practising nasya regularly in the right season.
न तस्य चक्षुर्न घ्राणं न श्रोत्रमुपहन्यते।
न स्युः श्वेता न कपिलाः केशाः श्मश्रूणि वा पुनः॥
— Charaka Samhita, Sutra Sthana 5
Meaning: One who practises nasya regularly keeps the eyes, nose and ears healthy, and the hair does not turn grey or brown early.
Tila Taila & Aja Dugdha (sesame oil & goat's milk) · Sesamum indicum
Shastrokta view: Sesame oil is the best vata-pacifying oil, and goat's milk is the classical light, nourishing medium for nasya. Together they carry the herbs into the nasal passages.
Yashtimadhu, Daruharidra & Devdaru · Glycyrrhiza glabra · Berberis aristata · Cedrus deodara
Shastrokta view: Mulethi soothes and nourishes the mucosa, Daruharidra is classically described for disorders of the eyes, ears and mouth, and Devdaru is a strong vata-kapha shamaka for the head.
यष्टी हिमा गुरुः स्वाद्वी चक्षुष्या बलवर्णकृत्।
सुस्निग्धा शुक्रला केश्या स्वर्या पित्तानिलास्रजित्॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Yashtimadhu is cool, sweet and unctuous; it is good for the eyes, voice and hair (keshya), and pacifies pitta, vata and blood disorders.
Agaru, Ushira, Netrabala, Kamal, Shallaki & spices · Aquilaria agallocha · Vetiveria zizanioides · Pavonia odorata · Nelumbo nucifera · Boswellia serrata
Shastrokta view: Aromatic Agaru opens the channels, Ushira, Netrabala and Kamal cool pitta, Shallaki reduces inflammation, and Ela, Dalchini, Tejpatra, Vidanga and Musta clear kapha.
मुस्तं कटु हिमं ग्राहि तिक्तं दीपनपाचनम्।
कषायं कफपित्तास्रतृड्ज्वरारुचिजन्तुजित्॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Musta kindles agni, digests ama and pacifies kapha and pitta.
