Inside the Formula: Shastrokta Wisdom & Modern Research
Ayurveda describes hair (kesha) as a by-product (mala) of asthi dhatu. Premature hair fall and greying (khalitya, palitya) are linked to excess pitta, weak digestion and stress. Hair Care Tablet works from within. Keshya herbs nourish the hair, medhya herbs calm the mind, and rasayanas and bhasmas support the deeper dhatus.
Bhringraj · Eclipta alba
Shastrokta view: Also called Keshraja, "king of hair", Bhringraj is the foremost keshya herb and is also good for skin and liver.
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Bhringraj pacifies kapha and vata and is keshya (good for hair) and tvachya (good for skin).
Modern research: In an experimental study, Eclipta alba extract promoted hair growth and moved hair follicles into the growth (anagen) phase earlier. [Roy RK, et al. Hair growth promoting activity of Eclipta alba in male albino rats. Arch Dermatol Res, 2008]
Jatamansi · Nardostachys jatamansi
Shastrokta view: A medhya herb that calms the mind, gives lustre (kanti) and balances all doshas. It addresses stress, one of the hidden causes of hair fall.
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Jatamansi is medhya (calming to the mind), gives lustre and strength, and balances all three doshas.
Modern research: In an experimental study, Jatamansi rhizome extract showed hair-growth-promoting activity. [Phytochemical investigation and hair growth studies on the rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi DC, 2011]
Yashtimadhu (Mulethi) · Glycyrrhiza glabra
Shastrokta view: Bhavaprakasha calls Mulethi keshya, good for hair. It is also cooling for pitta.
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Yashtimadhu is cool, sweet and unctuous; it is good for the eyes, voice and hair (keshya), and pacifies pitta, vata and blood disorders.
Amalaki Rasayan & Dhatri Loha · Phyllanthus emblica
Shastrokta view: Amla is the classical rasayana for hair, used in almost every traditional hair oil and tonic. Dhatri Loha combines it with iron for rakta (blood).
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Amalaki has the virtues of Haritaki, and in particular it pacifies raktapitta and prameha and is a supreme rasayana.
"बड़ों का कहा और आंवले का खाया, बाद में पता चलता है।"
A Hindi proverb: the advice of elders and the amla you eat both show their sweetness later. Amla is sour at first, and its benefit comes with time.
Brahmi (Mandukaparni) · Centella asiatica
Shastrokta view: Bhavaprakasha describes Mandukaparni as having the same virtues as Brahmi. It is medhya and a rasayana for the mind and skin.
Rasayanas: Arogyavardhini, Swarna Makshik, Abhraka, Shilajit, Praval, Giloy · Classical preparations
Shastrokta view: These support agni and the liver (Arogyavardhini), rakta (Swarna Makshik), strength and dhatus (Abhraka, Shilajit) and cool pitta (Praval, Giloy). The aim is to correct the root of hair fall, not just its surface.
