Inside the Formula: Shastrokta Wisdom & Modern Research
In Ayurveda, amlapitta (acidity), indigestion and an irritable gut start with disturbed agni and aggravated pitta, and are often made worse by stress. Ayurveda recognised this gut–mind link long ago. Gut Care pairs cooling pitta-shamaka herbs with calming medhya herbs and the classical calcium-rich pishtis and bhasmas used for amlapitta.
Yashtimadhu (Mulethi) · Glycyrrhiza glabra
Shastrokta view: Sweet, cooling and soothing, Mulethi is the classical herb for amlapitta and burning in the stomach.
यष्टी हिमा गुरुः स्वाद्वी चक्षुष्या बलवर्णकृत्।
सुस्निग्धा शुक्रला केश्या स्वर्या पित्तानिलास्रजित्॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Yashtimadhu is cool, sweet and unctuous; it is good for the eyes, voice and hair (keshya), and pacifies pitta, vata and blood disorders.
Modern research: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, a licorice extract (GutGard) reduced symptoms of functional dyspepsia. [Raveendra KR, et al. An Extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra (GutGard) Alleviates Symptoms of Functional Dyspepsia: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med, 2012]
Sutshekhar Rasa · Classical preparation
Shastrokta view: A classical rasa-yoga used for amlapitta, nausea, hiccups and pitta-related headache.
Shankh Bhasma, Mukta-shukti, Praval & Jaharmohra Pishti, Kapardak Bhasma · Classical calcium preparations
Shastrokta view: Shankh (conch), Mukta-shukti (pearl oyster), Praval (coral), Jaharmohra and Kapardak (cowrie) are sheeta-virya, pitta-shamaka preparations. Classically they are used for amlapitta, burning and a sour stomach.
Jatamansi & Shankhpushpi · Nardostachys jatamansi · Evolvulus alsinoides
Shastrokta view: Both are medhya herbs. They calm the mind and so ease the stress-driven side of digestive complaints.
शङ्खपुष्पी सरा मेध्या वृष्या मानसरोगहृत्।
रसायनी कषायोष्णा स्मृतिकान्तिबलाग्निदा॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Shankhpushpi is medhya, eases disorders of the mind (manasa roga) and supports memory and agni.
Ushira (Khus), Lodhra & Apamarga Kshara · Vetiveria zizanioides · Symplocos racemosa · Achyranthes aspera
Shastrokta view: Khus cools pitta, Lodhra is grahi (soothes loose motions), and Apamarga kshara is the classical alkaline preparation for digestion.
उशीरं पाचनं शीतं स्तम्भनं लघु तिक्तकम्।
मधुरं ज्वरहृद्वान्तिमदनुत् कफपित्तहृत्॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Ushira (khas) is cooling and digestive; it relieves fever, nausea and pitta.
