Inside the Formula: Shastrokta Wisdom & Modern Research
Women's health in Ayurveda centres on the balance of artava (menstrual cycle) and rakta (blood). The common complaints of excess flow, white discharge (shweta pradara), weakness and irritability come from disturbed pitta, kapha and apana vata. She Care uses the classical stri-roga herbs Ashoka, Lodhra, Udumbara and Shatavari, together with Pradarantaka Loha and calcium-rich bhasmas.
Ashoka · Saraca asoca
Shastrokta view: The best-known herb for women in Ayurveda, it lives up to its name, "remover of sorrow". It is cooling, astringent and grahi, and it is used for pradara (excess or abnormal discharge).
अशोकः शीतलस्तिक्तो ग्राही वर्ण्यः कषायकः।
दोषापचीतृषादाहकृमिशोषविषास्रजित्॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Ashoka is cooling, bitter and astringent (grahi); it relieves burning, thirst and disorders of rakta (blood).
Modern research: A scoping review of Saraca asoca summarises its traditional use for menstrual disorders and reports its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant constituents. [Saraca asoca: A scoping review on the phytoconstituents, bioactives and their therapeutic effects. German J Pharm Biomater, 2022]
Lodhra · Symplocos racemosa
Shastrokta view: A classical astringent, cooling herb described for asrigdara (heavy bleeding) and raktapitta. It is a key yoni-roga herb.
लोध्रो ग्राही लघुः शीतश्चक्षुष्यः कफपित्तनुत्।
कषायो रक्तपित्तासृग्ज्वरातीसारशोथहृत्॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Lodhra is astringent, cooling and light; it pacifies kapha and pitta and is described for raktapitta and asrigdara (excess bleeding).
Udumbara (Gular) · Ficus racemosa
Shastrokta view: Cooling and astringent, it pacifies pitta, kapha and blood disorders. It is valued for excess discharge and burning.
उदुम्बरो हिमो रूक्षो गुरुः पित्तकफास्रजित्।
मधुरस्तुवरो वर्ण्यो व्रणशोधनरोपणः॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Udumbara is cooling and astringent; it pacifies pitta, kapha and blood disorders.
Shatavari · Asparagus racemosus
Shastrokta view: The pre-eminent rasayana for women. Its name is often read as "one with a hundred roots", a symbol of abundant vitality. It nourishes, cools and supports strength.
शतावरी गुरुः शीता तिक्ता स्वाद्वी रसायनी।
मेधाग्निपुष्टिदा स्निग्धा नेत्र्या गुल्मातिसारजित्॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Shatavari is cooling, sweet and nourishing; it is a rasayana that supports intellect, agni and strength.
Modern research: Reviews of Asparagus racemosus describe its adaptogenic, antioxidant and phyto-oestrogenic properties and its traditional use in women's reproductive health. [Asparagus racemosus: a review on its phytochemical and therapeutic potential]
Bala (Khareti), Brahmi & Chaulai · Sida cordifolia · Bacopa monnieri · Amaranthus spinosus
Shastrokta view: Bala is a classical strength-giving vata-shamaka herb, Brahmi steadies the mind, and Chaulai is a traditional cooling, rakta-supporting herb.
Pradarantaka Loha, Kukkutandatvak, Trivanga, Sphatika & Raal · Classical preparations
Shastrokta view: As its name says, Pradarantaka Loha is the classical preparation for pradara. Kukkutandatvak bhasma (eggshell calcium) is used for shweta pradara and bone strength. Trivanga is a classical uro-genital bhasma, while Sphatika (alum) and Raal are classical astringents.
