Inside the Formula: Shastrokta Wisdom & Modern Research
Ayurveda sees prameha / madhumeha as a disorder of agni, kapha and meda (fat tissue) that gradually weakens the dhatus and ojas. Diabetes Care follows this shastrokta logic. It brings together tikta-kashaya herbs to manage kapha and meda, rasayanas to protect the tissues, and classical bhasmas to restore strength.
Jamun Beej (Jambu) · Syzygium cumini
Shastrokta view: Jamun seed is kashaya (astringent), grahi and kapha-pitta shamaka. Grandmothers across India have dried and powdered it for "sugar" for generations.
Modern research: Reviews of Syzygium cumini summarise hypoglycaemic and antioxidant effects reported for the seed in experimental and some clinical studies. [Pharmacological potentials of Syzygium cumini: a review, 2013]
Giloy Satva (Guduchi) · Tinospora cordifolia
Shastrokta view: Called Amrita for its rasayana nature, it is described for prameha, burning sensation and all three doshas.
गुडूची कटुका तिक्ता स्वादुपाका रसायनी।
संग्राहिणी कषायोष्णा लघ्वी बल्याग्निदीपनी॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Guduchi is a rasayana; it gives strength, kindles agni and is described for all three doshas, burning, thirst, prameha, jaundice and fever.
Modern research: Research on Tinospora reports antidiabetic, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities. [Genus Tinospora: Ethnopharmacology, Phytochemistry, and Pharmacology (review)]
Amalaki Rasayan · Phyllanthus emblica
Shastrokta view: Charaka's foremost rasayana. Bhavaprakasha singles it out as prameha-ghna, a destroyer of prameha.
हरीतकीसमं धात्रीफलं किन्तु विशेषतः।
रक्तपित्तप्रमेहघ्नं परं वृष्यं रसायनम्॥
— Bhavaprakasha Nighantu
Meaning: Amalaki has the virtues of Haritaki, and in particular it pacifies raktapitta and prameha and is a supreme rasayana.
"बड़ों का कहा और आंवले का खाया, बाद में पता चलता है।"
A Hindi proverb: the advice of elders and the amla you eat both show their sweetness later. Amla is sour at first, and its benefit comes with time.
Shilajit (purified) · Asphaltum
Shastrokta view: In Charaka Samhita, Shilajatu is the great rasayana for prameha. It supports strength and stamina and nourishes the dhatus.
न सोऽस्ति रोगो भुवि साध्यरूपः
शिलाजतु यं न जयेत् प्रसह्य॥
— Charaka Samhita, Chikitsa Sthana 1
Meaning: There is hardly a curable disorder on earth that Shilajatu cannot help overcome. It is Charaka's celebrated verse of reverence for this rasayana.
Classical bhasmas: Trivanga, Kanta Loha, Abhraka · Classical preparations
Shastrokta view: Trivanga bhasma (made from three purified metals: vanga, naga and yashada) is a classical prameha preparation, while Kanta Loha and Abhraka bhasma are described as rasayanas that restore bala (strength) and support rakta. They are prepared by classical shodhana-marana methods and used only under supervision.
